When you throw away a bottle or a cardboard box in the trash, do you think about where it goes, or what it does to the environment? Most people don’t. The truth is, there are many benefits to throwing that bottle into the recycling bin, instead of the trash can.
Recycling creates jobs. Recycling about 10,000 tons of waste can create as much as 36 jobs. Recycling can make you money, too. Many companies will pay for your old cell phones, batteries, and ink cartridges.
Recycling cuts down on dangerous emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
Trash in landfills can break down and blend into a toxic slop called leachate, which can leak out of the landfill and contaminate groundwater supplies.
Skipping the trashcan saves natural resources; trees, oil, and natural gas.
Many recyclable items are made with these resources. Why would you dispose of these items, when they can be reused indefinitely?
There are many more benefits to recycling, but the bottom line is: recycling greatly benefits the environment. When choosing where to throw your bottles, cans, paper and cardboard products, the choice is clear.
